Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20)

4 slices of rye bread

4 slices of American cheese (or your preferred cheese)

1 large onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

Optional: garlic powder, for extra flavor

Instructions

Prepare the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, stirring occasionally, about 15-20 minutes. Once done, set them aside.

Season the Ground Beef: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and a sprinkle of garlic powder if desired. Mix gently, avoiding overhandling.

Form Patties: Divide the beef mixture into four equal portions and shape them into burger patties, slightly larger than the bread slices, as they will shrink during cooking.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet used for the onions, increase the heat to medium-high. Add a little more butter if needed and place the patties in the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. A classic patty melt is best enjoyed cooked to medium.

Assemble the Melt: Once the patties are nearly done, top each with a slice of cheese, allowing it to melt while the patties finish cooking.

Grill the Sandwiches: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. In a clean skillet, place two slices of bread buttered-side down. Place a cheese-topped patty on each, followed by a generous helping of caramelized onions. Top with another slice of cheese and finish with the remaining slices of bread, buttered-side up.

Grill Until Golden: Cook the sandwiches on medium heat for about 4-5 minutes on each side until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted.

Serve & Enjoy: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet, cut them in half if desired, and serve with a side of pickles or fries.
