Hobo cuisine has a rich history that dates back to the Great Depression in the United States, when many individuals, often referred to as "hobos," traveled the country in search of work and better living conditions. These resourceful individuals relied on simple, inexpensive ingredients to create meals that were filling and easy to prepare. Casseroles, a staple of hobo cooking, became a practical solution for cooking over a campfire or in a limited kitchen setup.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced

1 medium onion, chopped

1 can (15 oz) green beans, drained

1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp paprika

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they are translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned and no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess grease if necessary.

Stir in the garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper to the beef mixture. Make sure everything is well combined.

In a large baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes on the bottom. Top with half of the cooked beef mixture, followed by half of the green beans and half of the cream of mushroom soup. Sprinkle with half of the cheese.

Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients: potatoes, beef, green beans, soup, and finish with the remaining cheese on top.

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.
