Ingredients

1 pound ground turkey (preferably lean)

1 medium jalapeño, finely chopped (seeds removed for less heat)

1/2 small red onion, grated

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 egg, beaten

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (or oats for a gluten-free version)

Olive oil for grilling

Whole wheat burger buns

Avocado slices (optional)

Sliced cheese (pepper jack or your choice, optional)

Lettuce, tomato, and pickles for toppings

Instructions

Prepare the Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, chopped jalapeño, grated red onion, minced garlic, cilantro, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, beaten egg, and breadcrumbs. Mix until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.

Form Burgers: Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty, about 3/4 inch thick. Use your thumb to create a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up while cooking.

Preheat Grill: Preheat your grill or grill pan over medium-high heat and lightly oil the grates to prevent sticking.

Cook the Patties: Place the patties on the grill, cooking for about 5-7 minutes on each side or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C). If adding cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.

Toast the Buns: While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the burger buns on the grill, cut side down, until golden brown.

Assemble the Burgers: On the bottom half of each toasted bun, layer your desired toppings starting with lettuce, followed by the turkey patty, avocado slices, tomato, and pickles. Top with the other half of the bun.

Serve and Enjoy: Serve the burgers immediately with sweet potato fries or a fresh salad on the side.
